That clunking, rattling noise every time you hit a pothole or speed bump is hard to ignore—and it shouldn’t be.   • Control arm bushings – Worn bushings allow too much movement in the control arms, producing a clunking sound, especially on rough pavement.
  • Strut mounts – A failing strut mount can produce a sharp rattle or knock as the suspension compresses and rebounds.
  • Ball joints – These allow the wheels to pivot while remaining attached to the vehicle. When they deteriorate, you may hear rattling or clunking during turns or over bumps.

Suspension problems are worth addressing promptly. Beyond the noise, worn components can affect your vehicle’s handling, tire wear, and overall safety.

Exhaust System Issues

Exhaust rattles are extremely common, particularly in older vehicles or those exposed to road salt. The two most frequent culprits are heat shields and exhaust hangers.

Heat shields are thin metal plates that protect surrounding components from exhaust heat. They’re prone to rust and can break loose over time, vibrating against nearby parts and producing a metallic buzzing sound that changes with engine RPM. Exhaust hangers and brackets hold the exhaust system in place. When they wear out or snap, pipes can shift and knock against the vehicle’s undercarriage.

A loose heat shield might seem like a minor nuisance, but left unchecked, it can fall off entirely and damage other components.

Shock Absorber Problems

Your shocks and struts work hard—every dip, crack, and bump in the road puts them to the test. Worn shock absorbers lose their ability to dampen movement effectively, which can cause excessive bouncing and rattling over uneven surfaces. In some cases, it’s not the shock itself but the shock mount that’s failing, producing a tapping or clunking sound as the suspension cycles through its range of motion.

Loose Interior Trim or Cabin Items

Before assuming the worst, it’s worth ruling out the obvious. Loose trim panels, worn door check straps, or objects rattling around under seats or in the trunk can mimic suspension noises surprisingly well. A plastic panel vibrating against a door frame at low speeds can sound almost identical to a worn bushing. If the rattle disappears when you press on a specific panel or interior surface, that’s your answer.

What You Should Do Next

A good starting point is paying attention to when the noise occurs. Does it only happen over small bumps at low speeds? Does it change under acceleration or braking? Is it coming from the front, rear, or somewhere underneath? These details help narrow things down considerably.

That said, rattles that travel through the chassis are genuinely difficult to locate without putting the vehicle on a lift and performing a thorough undercarriage inspection. Misdiagnosing the source can lead to unnecessary parts replacements—or worse, missing something that actually matters for your safety.

Before booking any repairs, it’s also worth checking whether your vehicle has any open Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) or recalls related to the noise. Some rattles are documented manufacturer issues that may be covered at no cost to you.
